I've been wanting to learn how to sew for a LONG time now, and I finally decided that now is as good a time as any! Well, I admit, 1 month before I have a baby might not actually be the BEST time to learn, but I was sick of procrastinating so I bit the bullet anyway :) So, here is a pic of my new baby...the Singer Confidence 7467. Isn't she pretty?! She's sitting, very nicely, atop my desk just daring me to try to sew something. It came w/ an instructional DVD that I'm sure that I will watch about a million times, and Chris assures me (as only the best husband in the world would) that I'm sure to be the most wonderful sewer (is that a word??) ever! I shouldn't be intimidated at all when I have that kind of support, should I?! Anyway, I am very excited to get started, and I'm sure I'll post some of my projects on here as long as they're even halfway decent!
Just out of curiosity, does anyone have any suggestions for a sewing book that might help me out?? I've looked at "The Idiot's Guide to Sewing", and I'm seriously considering buying it if I don't hear of something better. Keep in mind that I've never touched a sewing machine In-My-Life so I'm sure that anything you suggest will help!!

I started with small projects, pillows and things like that before I moved onto anything big. I don't really sew for the necessity of making clothes, but I love making cute stuff for decorations. I actually bought sewing for dummies, and it works. Kinda makes you feel weird reading a book with the word dummies in the title, but it's helped.
I learned how to crochet watching you tube videos - maybe you can find stuff there, too. I'm very visual, so I need to see how it's done, not just read about it.
I had this wonderful ambition a while ago too! Josh bought me a sewing machine and I've made a few valances... they are easy and a nice straight stitch. I really want to learn to do more challenging things... mostly to make Halloween costumes for our kiddos! Planning on taking a class next summer!
I decided to pick up sewing about a year ago! I was recommended 2 books that have been AMAZING. Sew Everything Workshop by Diana Rupp and In Stitches by Amy Butler.
Sew Everything Workshop basically teaches you how to sew in such an easy to understand way and then has projects in there that are easy to read.
In Stitches has information but mostly you get for the beginner projects. Amy Butler knows how to write instructions to a pattern very clearly.
Good luck to you! I have someone I turn to when I have a sewing question and it is wonderful. I'm pretty new to it, but feel free to ask me anything and I can answer or ask my resource! :)
I'm SEW jealous! Bryan just laughs at me when I tell him I want a sewing machine...
