A 3rd Generation Pianist...

My mom got Elli this cute pink piano for her birthday, and Elli is now obsessed with it!! I think it's pretty cool that she can sit on the little seat and move her little fingers that way since, sadly, she's never seen anyone play before. Well, unless you count the times that I drag her to the instrument section of Best Buy and make her sit in her stroller while I play the keyboards and dream of the day that we'll have a piano again :) Ha!

I remember my mom playing the piano all the time when I was a little girl. First, it was on the up-right that I learned on, and then it was on the Baby Grand that my grandparents bought for her as a gift. Oh how I love playing on that piano, and hearing the music fill the rooms of my mother's home. I think it's so important to instill a love of music in children, and hopefully I'll be able to do that for Elli...with or without a "real" piano :)

Do y'all have musical instruments in your home? If so, do you play for your kids? And at what age did you start lessons? It's good to be prepared for the future, you know! Ha!

I've always wanted to learn to play the piano. We just had an electric keyboard as a kid, but my mom got some basic books and I worked my way through them. Unfortunately, I never got past the super basic kids exercise books. I think my mom figured that since I played the flute and was in band at school I wouldn't care as much about piano lessons.

As for music in our house, sometimes I play my flute for Audrey and have since she was tiny. Kyle plays the tin whistle and has been playing for her since before she was born. (When I was pregnant she would kick whenever she heard a song she liked.) Now that she is older sometimes he'll let her hold and play with one of his inexpensive, plastic whistles while he's playing because it doesn't have any sharp edges for her to hurt herself on. (She's not allowed to stand or try to walk with it in her mouth, obviously.)

I don't know what we are going to do in the way of music lessons. I would love to have a piano so that I could play for Audrey and she enjoyed banging on the keys of the one at a friend's house several months ago, but it will be a while before we can afford one. Our plan right now is to just have music around and let her play stuff when she's interested. We play classical music in the car and if she's needing to be held a lot on a given day we play music can dance for hours. I figure at some point she'll decide that she wants to learn more and then we'll follow her cues.

My violen techer in elementary begged my mom to take me out of orchestra because I was not getting the hang of it. I know that I won't be teaching Elynn any musical talent. I would like for her to learn the piano...I think it's a "southern-lady" thing.
